Even the youngest kids rule on the high seas. Carnival Cruise Lines offers supervised Camp Carnival activities split by age groups that run from 9 a.m. - 10 p.m. Perks include 4,200 square-foot play areas on some ships, along with arts and crafts centers, activity walls, indoor climbing mazes and computer labs. New programs also focus on reading, art, music, geography and physical fitness.
Royal Caribbean also has a full-bodied program for kids age three and up, but the line also has unusual child-parent enrichment sessions for Aqua Tots (18-36 months) and even Aqua Babies (6-18 months). Designed by Fisher Price, these playtime sessions require parent participation.
Disney Cruise Line, not surprisingly, offers tons of kid-supervised fun in various age groups, including a Little-Mermaid-themed nursery at sea designed for those up to three years old.
Cunard also provides a nursery for kids ages one and up. Both Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Line give kids under two the chance to play in a playroom while accompanied by a parent.
On Holland America Line, one creative program teaches young kids to interact with peers and counselors. In Camp Amsterdam, small kids divide into camping teams to create a tent, flag, camper names, mascot, hand-shake, song or cheer, and kids enjoy stories and snacks that include s’mores and hot chocolate. Another option is a Safari Party, complete with jungle masks, coloring, stories, and even a roaring contest.
Princess Cruises looks out for kids three to seven in its Princess Pelicans supervised program; games and activities are complemented by “edutainment” such as marine life activities and visits from park rangers.
Celebrity Cruises offers hands-on “Celebrity Xperiments” science projects for kids three and up. These 10-minute Xperiments cover gravity, geology, chemistry and marine science.
Space dedicated to children is rare on luxury ships, but Crystal Cruises runs supervised children’s activity programs, including one for kids 3-7, on select voyages and during summer and holidays.
Many kids’ cruise activity programs are complimentary, and babysitting is often available for an extra fee, including late at night when parents want to enjoy dining, dancing or the casino, or on port days when they may wish to go ashore.
