A weekly collection of tips and ideas for the leisure traveler

South America - Discover a Continent of Wonders by Sea

Considered the southernmost point of Chile and, by some, the bottom of South America, Cape Horn has long held great significance. Before the creation of the Panama Canal, the landmark was viewed as a major milestone for vessels carrying goods around the world. Today, its rich history continues, and the Horn - along with the entire South American coast - remains a nautical rite of passage that beckons old salty dogs and first-timers alike.

Naturally, the only way to really understand and appreciate the majestic beauty and historical importance of the Horn is from the sea. And the rush of a high-seas adventure is perfectly captured onboard a beautiful cruise ship.

Sailing beyond the Cape, into the Strait of Magellan, further heightens the experience. Only there do the glaciers and fjords compete with forested coastlines and mountain peaks. And When it comes to wildlife, few areas can compare to the magnitude of breaching whales and soaring giant condors.

Amazon Adventures

South America offers you an endless journey of discovery, and cruising along the second-largest river in the world is proof of that. Starting from a cliff in the Peruvian Andes, the Amazon River carries more water than the Nile, Mississippi and Yangtze Rivers combined.

Along the banks of the Amazon, you’ll find a little of everything - undisturbed wilderness, thriving cities, indigenous people and spectacular wildlife.

Sailing between San Juan and Manaus provides the region’s best vantage point. Float by grass huts, canopies of trees filled with monkeys, and even spot the Amazon’s freshwater dolphin, Boto, as you sail into the heart of the jungle.

Complete Your Escape On Land

The coast of South America is spectacular, and its interior is equally impressive. Explore the region for your self on a cruisetour. Explore Iguazu Fallas, the awe-inspiring waterfalls bordering Brazil and Argentina. Next enjoy, Bueno Aires, the “Paris of South America.” Or perhaps head high into the mountains in search of the Inca’s Los City, Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site rediscovered in 1911.
